Preparing Original A and B Rolls for Printing
Preparing 16mm Printing Leaders
A and B Wind Emulsion Positions
Screening Conditions

The printing leaders on your A and B rolls and photographic sound negative provide necessary information to you and the laboratory personnel. Following the recommendation practice for preparation and making leaders minimizes the chance for misunderstanding or error. Although the description of how to prepare and mark leaders may seem complex in words, in practice it becomes a relatively easy process. Referring to the illustration while reading the text and preparing the leaders makes the routine much easier.

Picture Head Leaders (Figure 11a - Head Leaders)
Place the beginning of the work print in the synchronizer along with two lengths of single perf white leader at least 18 feet long. If you have more than A and B rolls of picture, add another length of white leader for each additional picture roll.

Roll forward until the "Edit Sync" mark on your work print leader is in the synchronizer. Mark the picture roll leaders on the same frame as the "Edit Sync" mark on the work print and label them "Printer Start". Set your synchronizer to zero on this frame. Roll forward exactly 9 feet, to 9 feet 0 frames on your synchronizer. Place 3 "x"s across this frame on each picture roll. Roll forward exactly 26 more frames, to the frame that is 9 feet and 26 frames from your "Printer Start" zero frame. Mark this frame with 3 dots on each picture roll. These marks will later serve to line up your photographic sound negative in projection sync.

Now roll forward to exactly 12 feet on the synchronizer. This will bring you to the "Picture Start" frame in the Universal leader on you work print. Splice a new Universal leader into your B roll in sync with the Universal leader in your work print. Place an equal amount of black leader in the same place on your remaining picture rolls.

As a final check, the "2" frame of the Universal leaders should fall at 15 feet and 24 frames from the "Printer Start" zero, and the first frame of your picture will be 16 feet and 32 frames.

Continue by conforming your originals to the work print from this point, with your first scene on the A roll. topˆ

Picture Tail Leaders (Figure 11b - Tail Leaders)
After the last scene of your film, splice a Universal tail leader into the roll opposite the last scene, in sync with the Universal tail leader in your work print, and an equal amount of black leader into the same place on the remaining picture rolls. Splice at least 16 feet of single perf white leader onto each roll. Zero your synchronizer on the frame marker "Finish" in the Universal tail leader. Roll forward to exactly 3 feet zero frames on the synchronizer, and again place 3 "x"s across each picture frame at this point. Roll forward 26 more frames, to 3 feet 26 frames on the synchronizer, and place 3 dots on each picture roll at this point. Continue rolling forward to exactly 12 feet and zero frames on the synchronizer and mark each picture roll with a large X and label "Printer End". This will be in sync with the "Tail Edit Sync" frame on your work print. Roll forward another 4 feet and cut off the white leader on each picture roll at 16 feet and zero frames. Now splice 2 feet of single perf black leader to the end of each roll. topˆ

Sound Head Leaders (Figure 11a - Head Leaders)
Place the "Beep" on the photographic sound negative in sync with the "2" frame of the Universal leader in the synchronizer. Roll backwards (toward the head) to the splice between the Universal leader and the white leader on your picture rolls. Splice at least 18 feet of single perf white leader to the head of the track here. Continue rolling toward the head until you reach the three dots across the picture frames. At this frame, mark the track with three "x"s in the track area. Roll further toward the head until you reach the "Printer Start" frame on the picture. Now zero your synchronizer forward (toward tails) to 0 feet and 26 frames, and place a large "X" on this frame of the track leader. Mark this frame "Printer Start". The "Printer Start" frame of the track will now be 26 frames behind the "Printer Start" frames of the picture rolls to allow for projection sync. topˆ

Sound Tail Leaders (Figure 11b - Tail Leaders)
Wind to the tail of the show, and again splice white leader to the photographic sound negative at the same place as the white leader was spliced to the picture rolls. Across from the three dots on the picture roll, mark three "x"s in the track area of the sound negative. Continue on toward the tail. Set the synchronizer to zero at the "Printer End" frame on the picture rolls, and again roll toward the tail to 0 feet and 26 frames. Mark this frame on the track with a large "X" and label it "Printer End". Splice on 2 feet of black leader just as you did on the picture rolls to finish the job. topˆ

Identifying the Leaders
Mark the white leaders at the head and tail of each roll with the information shown in the illustration: Head and Tail, Roll designation, Type of film, Title and Producer. On the photographic sound negative, mark the type, and wind of the track.

Note that the print-through data should appear only on the roll that does not have the Universal leader. topˆ
